At present we have around 300 hives of bees in various sites (called apiaries) around the Worcestershire countryside. However, 3 apiaries are right on the edge of Bromsgrove and benefit from the rich nectar sources found in parks and gardens.
As you might expect, honeybees are usually very docile and don't sting unless severely provoked. On occasion we do get a misbehaving colony which is swiftly removed to a remote apiary so it can't contribute to the breeding programme producing our next generation of queens.
In recent years there has been plenty of media coverage about declining bee populations. We've had our share of winter losses too but the plus side is that the remaining bees are now stronger than ever.
